The Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act (COIDA), Act 130 of 1993, mandates that all employers in South Africa register with the Workman’s Compensation Fund within 7 working days of hiring their first employee. This law applies to companies and individuals alike. As of 10 March 2021, South African households employing domestic workers, gardeners, nannies, caregivers, drivers, and similar roles must also register for COID to ensure their employees are covered in the event of work-related injuries or diseases.
